Using the MFM in a study

Do you want to use the MFM as an outcome measure in a clinical study?
Below you will find all the information regarding its use and the necessary training

Right to use of the MFM
The use of the MFM in clinical practice or as a judgement criterion in a clinical study is not subject to a fee, its use is free of charge.
Only user manuals and scoring sheets are subject to copyright, in accordance with French law.
Training of therapists

In order to ensure good reliability and reproducibility of the tool, all therapists evaluating patients in a clinical trial must be trained in its use during a face-to-face training session and must have validated the training by passing the certification test.
For therapists who have been certified more than 2 years before the start of the trial, we can offer shorter training sessions called “Refreshment”.

As part of the implementation of a therapeutic trial, we recommend that MFM training be held during the investigator meeting where all examiners will be invited to a complete MFM or “Refreshment” type training depending on their knowledge of the tool (theoretical and practical).

Compensatory movements can lead to a decrease in scores. In order to make therapists aware of the most commonly used compensations for patients with a specific neuromuscular disease (for example in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy or Spinal Muscular Atrophy), we can offer training focused on a specific type of pathology.
Please contact us beforehand so that we can study the feasibility.

Tracking therapists' abilities to score the MFM throughout the study

In order to ensure that therapists maintain a sufficient scoring level of the MFM items throughout the study, we can offer to do quizzes on the MFM website during the study.
A “refreshment” type of training can be offered for therapists who fail the quizzes.

Data analysis and management of missing data

A score of 0 must be assigned to each item with a missing score.
Regarding the calculation of scores, it is possible to calculate a score by domain (D1, D2 and D3) only if the number of items with missing data is less than 15%. Thus, a maximum of 2 items with missing data is allowed for the calculation of scores D1 and D2, and a maximum of 1 item for D3. The total score can only be calculated if the 3 scores D1, D2 and D3 could be calculated.
The number of patients with missing data should also be analyzed.
