Assessment of effects of long term steroid treatments on body composition, assessed by Dual X-Ray absorptiometry, in 21 patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). After two years of steroid treatments, the lean tissue mass values increased significantly and the percentage of body fat mass remained practically constant in comparison with the initial visit. In the steroid-naïve patients, there were no significant increases in the lean tissue mass but deterioration in body composition confirmed by a significant increase in the percentage of body fat mass. After 24 months, MFM total score was stable in the corticoids study group and significantly decreased in the steroid-naïve patients.
